Leanne has a real gift for taking research on memory, play-based learning, and early language development and making it practical, friendly, and doable for busy families. Each book combines evidence-based ideas with activities, templates, and printables that parents can use right away, without special equipment or expertise. Her tone is encouraging and never preachy. She reminds parents that small, everyday moments of connection matter most, and she handles screen time, AI safety, and developmental concerns responsibly. Leanne handles specialised topics such as bilingual development and early signs of autism with accuracy and sensitivity, always grounding her advice in established research and encouraging parents to seek professional guidance where needed. For any parent who wants to support their child's learning with confidence, Leanne's guides are a valuable and reassuring resource.
About Kelly
Kelly Tunny, trained in early childhood education at Macquarie University, opened her first childcare centre in 2006. Over the next two decades she established Berowra Cottage Children's Centre and Kincumber Preschool Kindergarten, then went on to build two more centres from the ground up in Cardiff and West Wallsend in the Newcastle region. She has helped thousands of young children take their first steps into learning and has guided their families along the way. She has also raised three boys, so she knows first-hand what it's like to keep curious little minds busy at home.
Description
Studies for hours, then goes blank in the test?
Most children are told to “study for the test”, but nobody shows them how. So they re-read their notes, highlight everything and feel like they know it, until the test starts.
A major review of study techniques found that testing yourself and spreading study out are among the most useful strategies, while re-reading and highlighting are among the least. Study Smart at Home teaches your child the strategies that work, one a week, in just 10 minutes a day.
How it works
1. Learn a strategy. Each week starts with one study strategy and a short passage about Australia or science, such as the Great Barrier Reef, Federation, Uluru or the water cycle.
2. Practise it, then use it at school. Your child practises the strategy on the passage, then uses it on their own school topic, homework or upcoming test.
3. Quiz from memory. Weekly quizzes include questions from earlier weeks, so your child sees spaced practice working for themselves.
20 strategies your child will learn
- Remembering: brain dumps, quizzing yourself, flashcards that work, spacing it out, chunking, memory tricks
- Understanding: mind maps, two-column notes, summarising from memory, explaining it, words and pictures
- Practising: mixed practice, spelling and word study, maths facts and formulas
- Tests: planning revision, test-day skills, learning from mistakes, and building their own study system
Everything you get
- 119 printable A4 pages in a bright, colourful design
- 20 weekly units, each with 5 short pages: Learn it, Practise it, Use it at school, Quiz it and Check & reflect
- 20 short practice passages with facts checked against Australian sources such as the Australian Museum, CSIRO and the Parliamentary Education Office
- Templates for real school work: two-column notes, mind maps, flashcards, a weekly planner and a test countdown planner
- A study skills snapshot for Week 1 and Week 20, a progress tracker and a Study Smart Champion certificate
Built on research
Written by Leanne Meyers, K–6 Learning Support Teacher (Special Education degree). The book follows the Australian Education Research Organisation’s (AERO) guidance on spacing and varying practice, the NSW Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation’s work on working memory, and the international review of study techniques by Dunlosky and colleagues (2013). A full references page is included.
Is it right for my family?
Yes, if your child re-reads instead of studying, leaves everything to the last minute, forgets what they learned for a test, or feels anxious about NAPLAN and school tests.
You don’t need to be a teacher. Older children can work through the pages on their own, and you check in using the parent strip.
Our promise to you
Use Study Smart at Home for 14 days. If it isn’t right for your family, contact us and we’ll refund every cent. No forms, no fuss.
Questions parents ask
What ages is it for?
Years 4 to 8. It’s a great fit for upper primary and the move into high school.
Will it help with NAPLAN?
It teaches real study and test-taking skills, like reading questions carefully, planning revision and learning from mistakes. It doesn’t teach test tricks.
Does it replace homework?
No, it makes homework time more effective. Every week has a page for your child’s real school topics.
How do I get it?
Straight after checkout you’ll get a download link on screen and by email. Print what you need, when you need it.
